Diabetes Employer Outreach: Free Workplace Screenings
Did you know that employees with diabetes may be more likely to be absent from work? Furthermore, as the disease progresses, they may suffer from heart disease, high cholesterol, renal failure, loss of limb or blindness.
For employers, a work-site diabetes screening by PacMed is an effective preventive health strategy that’s easy to implement. Screenings are free and confidential.

Screenings can identify people who have pre-diabetes symptoms, undiagnosed diabetes or uncontrolled diabetes. And the sooner that happens, the sooner they can begin treatment.
PacMed is partnering with Premera Blue Cross and the American Diabetes Association to raise diabetes awareness and prevention. Free on-site screenings and education are a part of this effort.
What does a screening event entail?
You simply provide a space, perhaps a conference room or part of your cafeteria. Certified Diabetes Educators from PacMed conduct the free screenings and provide basic educational materials to interested employees.
By collaborating with you, the employer, through follow up training opportunities, we can help you support your workforce as an advocate for diabetes prevention and treatment.
Here are some photos from one of our past employer screenings:
What happens if an employee shows signs of diabetes?
Employees who appear to be at risk for diabetes will be encouraged to see their primary care provider, or, if they don’t have one, to make an appointment with a PacMed provider.
Patients new to PacMed will receive case management for the first six months of their diabetes treatment. This involves individual counseling, goal setting and progress tracking, educational materials and classes—all in a collaborative environment. PacMed’s program was accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators in June 2010.
Testimonials
- From a participant: "The Certified Diabetes Educator took my blood pressure—high, [and my] blood sugar was high at 308. If I had not done the test, I still would have been showing up for work, not feeling too good, not knowing my blood sugar was that high. ... I am glad I went to the screening, especially at my age. … That’s why I am sharing this health issue with people out there: when in doubt, take your test and take care of yourself." -Screening participant
- From an employer: "I cannot thank you enough for sending Jan [Rystrom] our way. She has, by far, been THE BEST speaker we have had this year, and we have had many. Her presentation addressed EXACTLY what she said it would, her materials were colorful and very pleasing to the eye, and her presentation (including the slides) was magnificent....Again, thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful benefit, resource, and speaker with us, and I look forward to having more interactions with you and your team in the near future." -Carrie, Benefits Manager
