Laser Vision Correction
Laser vision correction is a procedure that involves using an excimer laser to reshape a patient's cornea to correct his or her refractive error. This reduces the need for glasses and/or contacts. There are different types of laser vision correction treatments including laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK), photo-refractive keratectomy (PRK), and laser epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK). All are excellent procedures, but the vast majority of procedures performed today are LASIK. Millions of people have safely and successfully undergone laser vision correction.
What is a refractive error?
A camera works by focusing light through a lens system onto film to capture a sharp picture. The eye, like a camera, has a lens system (cornea and lens) to focus light onto the retina so we can see clearly. When the eye is too long or too short, the light rays do not focus properly on the retina. This results in a condition called "refractive error." Patients with long eyes typically suffer from nearsightedness or myopia, and patients with short eyes typically present with farsightedness or hyperopia. Astigmatism occurs when a patient's eye is more oval shaped (like a football) than round shaped (like a basketball).
