What you accomplish every day for your company is truly valuable, so give yourself a pat on the back for the hard work you do all year long—wellness related and otherwise. Celebrating You and Your Company!

As a coordinator for the Living Well Alliance (LWA), I’ve had the privilege of seeing and often participating in your thoughtful wellness programs. I’d like to share a few memorable highlights of clients’ creativity from 2017:

  • Providing delicious, healthy options at health fairs, seminars and in break rooms. A shout-out of “Thanks” to Lynden for the delicious infused water recipes (see recipes here).Also, high-fives to First Choice, Hermanson Company, Clark Nuber, A Place for Mom, Murray Franklyn, Puget Sound Bank, Peterson Sullivan and QBSI for providing healthy lunches at LWA events. Wonderful additions!
  • Using LWA biometric screenings as an incentive. Many of our clients use LWA biometric screenings as an incentive for employees to achieve discounts on health insurance. The Seattle Times has impressive participation in screenings.
  • Implementing behavioral-change counseling. Way to go Burien Community Center for enhancingyour community’s knowledge of health and financial wellness. The center took advantage of a partnership between Pacific Medical Centers and the national EnhanceWellness program to provide counseling that supports behavioral change.
  • Reaching employees from afar with webinars. Davis Wright Tremaine and A Place for Mom—great idea! They empowered ALL their staff.
  • Cooking up a storm. Thanks to Builders’ Hardware and the City of Auburn for experimenting with on-site LWA cooking classes. We love your enthusiasm!
  • Impressing me with your participation! I met many eager, curious staff-audiences this past year.The sites with the biggest turnout at LWA events in 2017 were Clark Nuber, Seattle Genetics and Edmonds School District.

Other effective ideas I’ve seen you use include exercise discounts from companies, videos on your intranet about diabetes prevention and management, and team challenges to drive participation in weight loss or other health goals.

Navigating Wellness at Your Site: Tips and Tricks for HR professionals

As we enter a new year, takesome time to think about wellness.Maybe you can incorporate some of our ideas below, or find inspiration from other companies’ programs in our “Celebrating You” article.

Wellness programming needn’t be costly or time consuming. Here are some ideas to benefit your employees’ long-term well-being:

  • See what deals your insurance company offers for wellness. Often insurance companies will offer wellness dollars to use for presentations or events. Talk with your broker to see if they offer deals such as discounts on gym memberships or online wellness programming for weight loss, nutrition or stress management.
  • Create hype around health:
    • Advertise health initiatives in common areas (kitchens, supply rooms, break rooms, stair landings) with eye-catching flyers.
    • Post health information (or webinars from Living Well Alliance) on your company’s intranet.
    • Have a health-themed potluck, including a teambuilding activity if appropriate.
    • Encourage weekly group walks during lunch or other breaks, or encourage the office to sign up for a nearby run/walk.
    • Get your managers and CEOs involved if possible; this is shown to boost participation!
    • Offer infused water or zero-calorie beverages in break rooms (see recipe ideas).
    • Outfit an unused room for midday stretching, working out or meditation.
  • Check the availability/funding for obtaining standing desks for workers to protect their lower backs and posture.
  • Schedule ergonomics-trained staff to meet with individuals at their workstations to prevent injuries from sitting.
  • Book your one complimentary Living Well Alliance (LWA) class. Great starting classes are Get Fit on the Clock and Stress Reduction.
  • Sign up for complimentary LWA screening. With more than 20 participants, LWA can give you aggregate data about your population’s health to better target your next programs.
  • Aim for bimonthly events to keep up your wellness interest.
  • Create a bulletin board in your break rooms to highlight activities you do during the year with pictures, recipes and information posted. LWA can offer recipes and posters to contribute after your events.
  • Try an office challenge such as points for steps/exercise, group walks or attending an LWA event with a reward such as a gift card or prize. Try the Stridekick.com app for employees to track.
  • Buy an electronic blood pressure cuff for the office to promote checking often. Post what blood pressure readings mean nearby for more education.
  • Offer financial incentives (if available) or discounts on health insurance costs for quitting smoking programs, Fitbit purchases, entries to races, cooking classes or gym memberships.

    2018 LWA Webinar Subscription

    The Living Well Alliance (LWA) is introducing an affordable way to get more wellness classes into your company. Join us this year for our live webinar subscription service! With your subscription, employees can log in from their computers to listen to live, 30-minute webinars on wellness-themed topics. All webinars are presented by a health professional.

    Attendees will receive a follow-up email with flyers or helpful resources mentioned in the webinar. Although the webinars are presented live, company subscribers will receive a complimentary recording and related handouts to post on their internal websites or to send to employees afterward.

    Subscription Package Options:

    One Time
    Description: Don’t want to commit? No problem! With this subscription, you can purchase and join individual webinars as you wish.
    Price: $50 each (billed when you enroll)

    Quarterly subscription
    Description: Get access to 4 webinars of your choice per year.
    Price: $150 per year ($37.50 per class)

    Monthly subscription
    Description: Get access to 12 webinars (1 per month) per year.
    Price: $400 per year ($33 per class)

    Webinar Topics—and Tailored Webinars

    Scheduled topics and dates will be provided for the current year to all subscribers. Organizations may also request a topic not on the list, enabling you to tailor wellness education to your employees for an additional cost of $150 each. Just pick a topic and contact LWA to discuss and find a mutually agreeable date and time. Tailored webinars typically run 45 minutes with more interaction directed to your company.

    10 Infused Water Recipes to Spice Up Your Hydration

    Borrowed from the Lynden Wellness Initiative

    For all recipes, start with filtered, cold water, add fruit and stir gently. Be sure to wash all fruit beforehand. Ideally, refrigerate infused water for 4-6 hours or overnight before serving. Enjoy!

    1. Cucumber Mint: 1 thinly sliced cucumber, 8 muddled* fresh mint leaves, 1/2 gallon water
    2. Citrus Blueberry: 2 thinly sliced oranges (with rind, for more pungent flavor), 1 cup blueberries, 1 gallon water
    3. Pineapple Mint: 1/4 pineapple,peeled and finely sliced; 10-12 muddled fresh mint leaves;1/2 gallon water
    4. Watermelon Basil: 2 cups finely chopped watermelon (rind and seeds removed), 15 muddled fresh basil leaves, 1 gallon water
    5. Strawberry Lemon: 15 fresh, finely sliced strawberries;1 sliced lemon (with rind);1/2 gallon water
    6. Cherry Lime: 2 cups halved fresh cherries, 1 thinly sliced lime, 1 gallon water
    7. Grapefruit Raspberry: 1 thinly sliced grapefruit (with rind);1/2 cup fresh raspberries, slightly muddled; 1 gallon water
    8. Mango Pineapple: 1 mango, peeled and thinly sliced; 1 cup finely chopped pineapple;1/2 gallon water
    9. Grape Orange: 2 cups grapes, halved; 1 thinly sliced orange (with rind); 1 gallon water
    10. Pineapple Basil: 1/4 fresh pineapple, thinly sliced; 15 muddled fresh basil leaves;1/2 gallon water

    *To muddle leaves, take a pestle or strong spoon and press the leaves against the edges of a bowl or strong measuring cup. The goal is to gently crush the leaves and release its aromatics.
