At the PacMed Pulmonary Function Lab, we are committed to partnering with you to assess and support your respiratory health through accurate, noninvasive testing and personalized care planning.

We offer comprehensive pulmonary diagnostic services, including Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) and 6-Minute Walk Tests (6MWTs), which are essential tools in evaluating lung function and exercise tolerance.

To help our patients breathe easier and live healthier lives, our lab is dedicated to excellence in respiratory diagnostics. Our technologists are certified and trained in pulmonary testing standards, and our lab follows best practices to ensure high-quality, reliable results. We strive to provide compassionate care and superior clinical service to our community.

Procedures Performed

Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs)
Evaluate lung volumes, airflow, and gas exchange to help diagnose conditions such as asthma, COPD, and restrictive lung disease.

6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT)
Measures functional exercise capacity and oxygen saturation during physical activity, often used to monitor chronic lung or heart conditions.

What to Expect During Your Pulmonary Test

Pulmonary Function Test (PFT):
You will be asked to breathe into a mouthpiece connected to specialized equipment that measures how well your lungs are working. The test may include breathing in and out forcefully, inhaling medication to assess response, or sitting in a small, enclosed booth for certain measurements. The procedure is painless and typically takes 30–60 minutes.

6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT):
You will walk at your own pace along a flat corridor for six minutes while your heart rate and oxygen levels are monitored. This test helps assess your endurance and oxygen needs during activity. Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Pulmonary Function Test?

PFTs are a group of tests that measure how well your lungs take in and release air and how efficiently they transfer oxygen into the blood.

How should I prepare for the test?

Avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and smoking before the test. Wear loose-fitting clothing and follow any specific instructions from your healthcare provider, especially regarding inhalers or medications.

Is the test safe?

Yes, both PFTs and 6MWTs are noninvasive and safe. If you have any concerns, especially regarding breathing difficulties or mobility, please let your provider know beforehand.

Will it hurt?

No, these tests are generally painless. You may feel short of breath or tired during the 6MWT, but staff will monitor you closely.

How long will the tests take?

PFTs typically take 30–60 minutes. The 6MWT takes about 15–30 minutes including preparation and recovery.

How do I get my results?

A pulmonologist or trained specialist will interpret your test results within 2–4 business days. A report will be sent to your referring provider and released to MyChart.
